The Marvegos® Fine Art School. About Us? Not Really.

It’s not really about us. It’s about the children and enabling them to exercise their own creativity, rather than teaching them what we know as art teachers and educators. That’s why we founded The Marvegos® Fine Art School.

In 1992 Rita Young, our founder, was searching for an art program for her young child in which they were not taught to copy work but rather to develop their innate creativity. Rita developed The Marvegos® approach out of a desire to nurture the creative spirit she saw in her own children, as well as those of her friends. During art classes for preschoolers the seeds of the creative spirit are first planted and nurtured. To read more about our philosophy and why Marvegos might be right for your child from preschool age through the teen years, please go to Why Marvegos.

Rita Young wrote a book about her teaching philosophy, so that parents could come along for the journey and share in this unique approach to inspiring children. Our students delight in their own personal discovery of form and function that always surprises us with its originality and unexpected twists. You can download the first in her series of E-art papers “Teaching Art to Children, The Marvegos Way.”

The first studio opened in Saratoga in 1993 and was followed by Los Gatos, Fremont, San Ramon and San Mateo. The Marvegos® also provides fine art programs to 16 outreach sites in the Bay Area and serves more than 1200 students annually.

It is said that organizations are only as good as the people in them. The Marvegos® Fine Art School has been fortunate to have a dedicated staff of artists/instructors, beginning with Rita Young. Rita has a Fine Arts degree from San Francisco State University with an emphasis in drawing and painting and has been producing her own art for thirty years. All of the instructors at the Marvegos Fine Art School hold a BA with a major in Art, a portfolio showing strength in drawing and painting, an ability to communicate with children, respect for the work and abilities of children, and an ideology that matches the approach taught at The Marvegos®.

Our Studio Manager, Paula Lucia, has a degree in Art and Design from the California Polytechnic State University. She is currently interested in painting fragmented memories by distorting and abstracting imagery into geometric forms. Using acrylic and oil paint, Paula's goal in her work is to create an image that feels both simple and graphic, while also complex and painterly. Paula comes from the Los Gatos studio where she taught for two years. As the architect of many of the art projects company-wide, she is an expert at making art fun and age-appropriate, all the while embodying the warm feeling and peace for which we at The Marvegos are known.

Her continued work at the Marvegos over the years speaks to her enduring belief in the Marvegos philosophy of using art to facilitate confidence building in each child.
