Choosing the Right Program Level
At Marvegos, each program level is designed to support a different stage of artistic and personal growth. Age ranges are helpful guidelines, but they are not strict rules. Every child develops at their own pace, and we look at readiness, confidence, focus, and maturity when helping families choose the right level.
There is no rush to change programs. Moving to a different level is not about being “better.” It is about finding the class where your child feels supported, challenged, and excited to create. In fact, staying in the right environment often builds stronger skills, deeper confidence, and a greater love of art.
This guide is for families who want help deciding which program level is the best fit and when it may be the right time to move to the next level. If you are ever unsure, your child’s teacher is your best resource. We observe students closely and are happy to guide you.
Art Exploration (Ages 4–7)
In Art Exploration, students:
- Learn foundational art vocabulary
- Explore a wide range of media and materials
- Engage in storytelling and imaginative thinking
- Begin drawing from observation
This level is a great fit for children who:
- Love variety and hands-on exploration
- Prefer imaginative thinking alongside skill building
- Are still developing focus and independence
Session 4 Note: We strongly encourage families not to move from Art Exploration into Fine Art Fundamentals during Session 4 of the school year. This session focuses entirely on acrylic painting on canvas, which can feel like a big leap from the variety and flexibility of Art Exploration. Waiting until Fall Session usually makes for a smoother transition.
Fine Art Fundamentals (Ages 7–10)
In Fine Art Fundamentals, students:
- Grow their skills in drawing from observation and arranging compositions
- Work from still lifes and photo references
- Practice techniques step by step while building confidence
- Spend more time developing and refining a single project
This level is a great fit for children who:
- Are curious about improving their observational drawing skills
- Can focus for longer periods
- Feel ready for more structure and deeper guidance
If your child is between Art Exploration and Fine Art Fundamentals, notice whether they are starting to slow down and take more care with their work. Fine Art Fundamentals is a good fit for students who are ready to observe more carefully and spend more time improving their work.
Expanded Fundamentals (Ages 10–12)
In Expanded Fundamentals, students:
- Work on longer, more in depth projects
- Explore more advanced concepts
- Balance structured guidance with increasing creative choice
This level is a great fit for children who:
- Enjoy being challenged
- Are open to revision and feedback
- Can stay engaged with longer term work
If your child is between Fine Art Fundamentals and Expanded Fundamentals, notice whether they are starting to look for more challenge or work more independently. Expanded Fundamentals is a good fit for students who can stay focused on longer projects, think carefully about their choices, and make changes to improve their work after receiving feedback.
Advanced Exploration (Ages 12+)
In Advanced Exploration, students:
- Design and manage their own projects
- Develop a personal artistic voice
- Explore advanced materials and concepts
This level is a great fit for children who:
- Can manage projects independently
- Feel confident making creative decisions
- Are motivated by personal goals
If your child is between Expanded Fundamentals and Advanced Exploration, notice whether they are starting to come up with their own project ideas and take responsibility for their work. Advanced Exploration is a good fit for students who can manage their time on their own, set personal goals, and work with teachers as mentors instead of following step by step instructions.
